From Pews to Power: The Rise of the Black Spiritual Renaissance and the Reclamation of Ancestral Power

Why So Many Black People Are Leaving the Church and Returning to Hoodoo

The Rise of the Black Spiritual Renaissance and the Reclamation of Ancestral Power

A Mass Awakening: The Shift in Black Spirituality

In living rooms, hair salons, group chats, and quiet moments of prayer, there’s a whisper turning into a roar.

Something is shifting in the soul of Black America.

We are awakening.

We are questioning.

And many of us are choosing to leave the church… and return to our roots.

Hoodoo. Ancestors. Candle magick. Spiritual baths. Rituals. Psalms. Power.

It’s not a trend.

It’s a return.

A History Written in Shadows: Why We Left Ourselves Behind

For centuries, we were told that to be "saved" we had to give up everything that made us sacred. Our connection to the earth, our herbs, our spirits, our ancestors, our power.

The very tools that helped our ancestors survive the brutality of slavery were demonized. Why?

Because a spiritually free Black person is a powerful one.

And power was something the oppressors couldn’t allow.

So instead:

We were forced to accept a whitewashed, patriarchal version of religion.

We were told our rituals were evil.

We were beaten or killed for practicing our native spirituality.

We were spiritually colonized.

But our ancestors were clever. They hid our traditions inside Christianity. They masked the old ways with the new, and in that fusion, Hoodoo was born.

The Role of the Black Church: Honor, But Not Home for All

Before we go further, let’s be clear:

The Black Church has been a pillar of resilience. A space for activism, education, and refuge during times of injustice.

It gave us Harriet Tubman, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahalia Jackson, and countless others who led with faith.

But for many of us today, the church feels like a place where:

Questions aren’t welcomed.

Women are silenced.

LGBTQ+ members are shunned.

Prosperity is preached, but poverty is glorified.

The divine feminine is erased.

Many are craving a deeper connection. A spirituality that uplifts instead of shames. That affirms instead of controls. That liberates instead of limits.

Enter: Hoodoo.

Hoodoo is Not a Religion. It’s a Remembrance.

Let’s get something straight: Hoodoo is not a religion.

It’s not a “cult” or “witchcraft.”

It’s not demonic.

It’s not evil.

Hoodoo is a sacred African American folk spiritual system.

It’s built on the lived experiences of enslaved Africans in the American South.

It’s oral, ancestral, herbal, and spiritual.

It includes:

Candle magick

Rootwork and protection

Money drawing rituals

Cleansing baths

Floor washes

Incense and prayers

Mojo bags

Psalms and Bible verses (yes, the Bible is a spellbook in Hoodoo)

It’s personal. It’s powerful. And most importantly... it’s yours.

Why They Feared It And Taught You To

Let’s talk truth.

Why were we taught to fear Hoodoo? Why were we told it was of the devil?

Because enslaved Africans used Hoodoo to:

Escape slavery

Curse abusive masters

Call in protection

Heal their wounds

Guide each other spiritually

In the eyes of white supremacy, that made Hoodoo dangerous.

So what did they do?

Outlawed it

Shamed it

Associated it with evil

Forced Christianity as a form of control

Used religion to break our connection to our own bloodlines

And over time, we began to fear ourselves.

But the devil they warned us about was just a disguise for our own divinity.

Reclaiming Your Crown: The Rise of the Hoodoo Healer

Today, a new generation of spiritual leaders, teachers, and rootworkers are rising.

They are unapologetically Black. Unapologetically spiritual. Unapologetically powerful.

Women like me, LadyDi of Rich Bitch Conjure, are stepping forward to teach what was once hidden.

Because you deserve to:

Know your ancestors

Work with your spiritual court

Use herbs and oils for real results

Stand in your power

Get free. Spiritually, emotionally, financially

And baby, when I say free…

I mean free from shame, fear, guilt, confusion, manipulation, and limitation.

Why Black Women Are Especially Walking Away

For generations, Black women were expected to:

Serve the church but never lead it

Silence their sensuality

Swallow abuse and call it “forgiveness”

Sacrifice their desires in the name of “God’s will”

Give and give and give and never receive

But now?

We are saying NO MORE.

We are lighting our own candles instead of waiting on deliverance.

We are setting our own altars instead of kneeling at the feet of judgment.

We are calling on our grandmothers instead of patriarchal approval.

We are manifesting wealth, pleasure, peace, and power.

And we’re doing it with herbs, oils, Psalms, intuition, and spirit.

That’s Hoodoo.

Yes, You Can Still Love Jesus and Practice Hoodoo

Listen, you don’t have to throw away your Bible to embrace Hoodoo.

In fact, Psalms are a cornerstone of Hoodoo practice.

The Bible is used as a spellbook.

Psalm 23 for protection

Psalm 35 for justice

Psalm 91 for shielding

Psalm 45 for attraction and love

Psalm 1 for blessings

Hoodoo is about intention. It’s about relationship.

It’s not about obeying a pastor or worshipping devil. It’s about partnering with your ancestors, your spirits, and your God.

So, no. You’re not “doing something wrong.”

You’re doing what your ancestors did before fear was weaponized.

The Great Return: From Religion to Relationship

People are tired of religion and hungry for relationship.

With God

With ancestors

With spirit

With themselves

They’re seeking:

Direct revelation

Sacred rituals

Grounded power

True healing

Divine feminine guidance

Financial freedom AND spiritual wholeness

This is why Hoodoo is rising.

Because it's not just a practice... it's a portal.

A portal to true freedom.

A portal to the most authentic relationship with God and thyself.

How to Begin Your Hoodoo Journey

You don’t need to be born into it.

Sis… you were never meant to live small.
